The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has revoked membership of its three affiliates in a move it says aligns with FIFA governance statutes.
FAM revoked the membership of the National Football Coaches Association, National Youth Football Association and National Referees Association at its annual general meeting held on Saturday, June 28 2025.
Delegates to the congress voted to revoke the membership of the three member associations to streamline governance and enhance professionalism within Malawi’s football structures.
The Northern Region Football Association Chairperson, Masiya Nyasulu, moved the motion to dismiss the three affiliates. He argued that the three associations were duplicating roles being handled by FAM’s internal departments.
FAM President Fleetwood Haiya has since justified the latest move, saying it was part of broader reforms aligned with FIFA’s governance guidelines.
“This is not about removing them from football but aligning them to operate more effectively outside FAM’s political structure,” he told FAM media.
“They will now report directly to the FAM executive through relevant sub-Committees. This change will allow us to support their operations more efficiently, especially in critical areas like youth development, coaching, and refereeing."
FAM now has seven affiliates, down from 10. The affiliates are the Super League of Malawi (SULOM), Women’s Football Association, Beach Soccer Association and the Four Regional Football Associations—Central, Southern, Northern, and Eastern Region.
