Some football competitions scheduled for this weekend have been suspended in Malawi to pave the way for next Tuesday’s tripartite general elections.
The Southern African country will go to the polls to elect a president, members of parliament and ward councillors. Registered voters aged 18 and above are eligible to participate in the elections.
In view of the elections, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has released a statement confirming the shelving of the competitions which it administers.
“FAM would like to inform its stakeholders that it has postponed all FAM organized national competitions and matches during the period 12th -18th September 2025,” the statement reads.
“The decision has been necessitated by the preparations for the 2025 Tripartite General Elections scheduled for 16th September 2025 which will affect a number of stakeholders including players, officials and security personnel for the games.”
However, FAM has no jurisdiction over the flagship TNM Super League which its member affiliate, the Super League of Malawi (SULOM), administers.
“FAM is urging its member associations to consider suspending the games during the period under the same circumstances. The said competitions will resume on 19th September 2025,” the statement adds.
SULOM is yet to comment on the matter. FAM runs all cup competitions while the league body manages the elite league.
