“We know where we failed against Lesotho,” said Malawi assistant coach Peter Mponda.

After a 1-0 opening defeat to Lesotho, the Flames will be aiming to redeem themselves when they meet Namibia in the COSAFA Cup Group B match on Sunday afternoon at the Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium.

Mponda told the Football Association of Malawi’s media team that the Flames have learned from their early setback.

“We had our video session and analysed the game thoroughly. One thing we picked up was our lack of presence in the box. We didn’t have enough bodies there,” the assistant coach explained.

The Flames still have a chance to sneak into the semi-finals after Angola and Namibia drew 1-1 on Thursday, leaving the group wide open.

Mponda called for a balance between controlling games and efficiency upfront when facing the Brave Warriors.

“In football, dominating possession doesn’t win you games. You need to get into the box and score goals. We’ve spoken to the boys and are finalising our tactical adjustments on the pitch,” Mponda added.

Namibia are favourites on paper, having beaten the Flames 1-0 in March during a FIFA World Cup qualifier. They are currently unbeaten in six matches.

Malawi are uncertain about the availability of defender Maxwell Paipi, who faces a late fitness test after limping off during the Lesotho match.
