Silver Strikers coach Peter Mgangira has warned his side against complacency going into Sunday’s FDH Cup final against fellow Malawi heavyweights Mighty Wanderers. The game presents both teams an early chance to win silverware.
The Malawi representatives in the 2025-2026 CAF’s Inter club competitions meet at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, a venue where they both registered positive results in the continental competition in October.
Strikers stunned Young Africans 1-0 while Wanderers beat Jwaneng Galaxy from Botswana by a similar margin in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round first leg matches.
However, the Tanzania Mainland Premier League and Botswana’s FNB Premiership champions overturned the tables to win the second leg games and sail through to the group phase at the expense of the Malawi opposition.
Now, it is back to the domestic assignments with Silver gradually drifting out of the league retention race. Therefore, FDH offers Mgangira’s men an early prospect of winning something this season.
Wanderers have been playing second fiddle to the Bankers in most meetings and in particular in this competition they lost 3-0 to their Lilongwe counterparts when the two teams met in the semifinal in 2021. Strikers went on to win the cup that year.
Despite having an upper hand, Mgangira has cautioned his wards against getting swayed away by their past dominance over the Nomads.
“We are well prepared for the final. The boys have shown up well in training and we expect nothing but winning this match. As a team, we won’t let previous records move us or let us down,” the coach told Strikers website.
Strikers captain Chikondi Kamanga also shared his thoughts on how he looks at their prospects of winning the cup.
“Morale is high in camp as we count down to the final. We are so motivated. as we are playing in our second final this year, and we have to do everything to get a win by the end of the day,” he said.
Silver defeated Civil Service United whereas Wanderers ousted FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, both by 1-0 margins to reach the final. Earlier this year, Strikers missed out on the Airtel Top 8 final after losing 1-0 to FCB Nyasa Big Bullets at the same Lilongwe venue.
Strikers hold the record as the winners of the inaugural edition of the FDH Cup in 2021.
