Malawi: Mponda reflects on Bullets’ painful loss to Wanderers

FCB Big Bullets coach Peter Mponda has described their 0-1 loss to fellow Malawi’s top-flight league side Mighty Wanderers in Blantyre on Sunday as very painful.

The former Flames defender insisted that his charges did everything right save for finding the target in the FDH Cup semifinal match at Kamuzu Stadium.

“It is very painful to take. Looking at the way we played, we did everything to get a good result. The boys wanted to win this game, unfortunately we are on the losing end again. They [Wanderers] capitalized on loose marking to punish us,” the coach said.

Bullets also lost 3-0 to Wanderers the previous Sunday in a TNM Super League match, a result that cost them top spot. The Nomads also won the league’s first round match, making it three straight victories over the rivals this season.

Mponda has since called for calm, stressing the need to motivate the players so that they can fight for the remaining league prospects. Bullets trail Wanderers by two points.

“We need to regroup quickly and find ways of motivating the players. We still have some games. We need to fight for the championship,” he said.

How Promise Kamwendo sent Wanderers to the FDH Cup final

Substitute Promise Kamwendo’s late strike handed Wanderers the victory and claimed Blantyre City bragging rights.

Kamwendo, who had come in for Thierry Tanjong Sama, powered his header into the net from Isaac Kaliyati’s delivery. The Nomads will meet Silver Strikers in the final. Strikers edged Civil Service United 1-0 on Saturday to advance to the final.
