Mighty Wanderers shrugged off Mighty Tigers 3-2 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Sunday, April 13, 2025, to lead the TNM Super League log table after round two of the season.
In-form winger Wisdom Mpinganjira scored a second-half double between Francis Madinga’s strike to seal the win for the hosts at the packed stadium in the Malawi commercial capital.
The Nomads, as Wanderers are called, went into the match seeking to improve on their 3-1 win over Blue Eagles the previous week while Tigers were gunning for the first maximum points of the season after a 2-1 loss to rookies Ekhaya United.
It was a game of contrasting playing styles with Tigers, led by sweeper Alex Kambirinya building play from the back, his effort complemented by midfielder Ben Manyozo but hardly by the meek frontline. Wanderers, or the Nomads, were calm and direct on the ball using the width and pace of wingers Madinga and Mpinganjira to stretch Tigers.
Little wonder then that Wanderers opened the scoring through winger Madinga who volleyed into the roof of the net from a rebound after Tigers' defence had cleared Mpinganjira's corner kick from the right wing in the eighth minute.
Eight minutes later, provider-turned-scorer Mpinganjira received the ball on the right wing, raced clear to shrug off his marker before turning and twisting past his markers then drilling a hard and low shot to squeeze his effort inside the near post.
Mpinganjira, whose father Bob is Wanderers’ coach, put the game beyond Tigers' grasp when he unleashed a rocket of a bullet into the roof of the net to make it 3-0.
Striker Promise Kamwendo nearly added the fourth goal for the Nomads when he was put through but he shot straight at the Kau Kau goalkeeper Tizola.
In the second half, Wanderers sought to manage the game as they slowed down the tempo thereby giving Tigers hope. Little wonder, the visitors reduced the deficit through Grayson Msowoya with eight minutes remaining on the clock.
That proved to be the last goal of the five-goal thriller taking the Nomads to the summit of the table while Kau Kau are third from the bottom of the 16-member log table.
Elsewhere, Mzuzu City Hammers stunned hosts Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos 1-0, Kamuzu Barracks lost 2-0 to fellow soldiers Moyale Barracks while Karonga United edged Mafco 1-0.
In other games played on Saturday, holders Silver Strikers’ slow start to the season under new coach Peter Mgangira continued when they drew two against hosts Chitipa United in the Northern Region.
In the Central Region, Eagles thumped rookies Songwe United 4-0 courtesy of Sholiga Stambuli’s double and one goal each from Micium Mhone and Schumacher Kuwali.
