Fazili names Malawi women’s squad for Lesotho friendlies

Malawi women’s national team coach Lovemore Fazili has named a 27-member squad to host Lesotho in friendlies later this month.

The Scorchers will face Lesotho at Mpira Stadium on Friday, 29th August and Sunday, 31st August 2025.

Notable exclusion from the squad is first-choice goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo who is preoccupied with her team Ntopwa Ladies who will participate in COSAFA qualifiers for the CAF Women’s Champions League.

The coach justified his decision to omit Sikelo, saying he needed to give a chance to other equally good keepers. The squad has only home-based players as the two matches fall outside the FIFA window for friendlies.

Nonetheless, the Scorchers have some notable experienced players such as free agent Sabina Thom and Letticia Chinyamula of Ascent Soccer.

The Scorchers, as Malawi are also called, are fine-tuning for the 2025 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola in October.

Malawi will take their strength-building matches to eight ahead of the WAFCON qualifiers, much to the delight of Fazili.

“It is good that we are playing at home. I am sure the game will give our players good exposure,” he said. The Scorchers have struggled in the strength-building matches, losing most of them.
