The bank has taken over the sponsorship from TNM, ending the mobile network service provider’s 18-year sponsorship of the league.
The bank has since rebranded the league from TNM Super League to FDH Bank Premier League effective this forthcoming season set to start in March.
Unveiling the sponsorship package in Blantyre on Wednesday evening, FDB Bank Managing Director Noel Nkulichi said from the annual MK1 billion sponsorship package MK375 million will go towards team awards and MK17 million individual player awards.
Some MK8 million has been allocated to monthly player awards, MK100 million will go towards a player welfare revolving fund (a first of its kind) while MK320 million will be channeled towards subvention for the 16 teams.
In his remarks, the Super League of Malawi president president, Brigadier General Gilbert Mittawa, hailed FDH for the financial support.
“The players’ revolving fund is a game-changer and the sponsorship is a milestone to the league,” said Mittawa.
Before FDH, TNM was sponsoring the league to the tune of USD 1.4 million (500 million kwacha) in the past two seasons.
Mighty Wanderers, who are sponsored by FDH founder Thom Mpinganjira, a business tycoon, are the league’s defending champions.
Mpinganjira’s son also owns Super League team, Ekhaya FC.
