Malawi Super League: Silver Strikers punish Songwe Border United

TNM Super League defending champions Silver Strikers recorded their second win of the 2025 season after punishing rookies Songwe Border United FC 4-1 on Thursday, May 15 2025.

Going into the game at Karonga Stadium, Silver coach Peter Mgangira had presided over just one win in three league games since replacing his former boss Peter Mponda, now in charge of FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.

Mgangira got his wish as striker Festus Duwe scored a first-half double with Chimwemwe Idana and debutant Emmanuel Allan adding the other goals to take Silver’s tally to seven points, five points behind the leaders, Bullets.

Duwe scored after making the most of defender MacDonald Lameck’s throw-in barely after two minutes before adding his second of the game 32 minutes later courtesy of playmaker Chimwemwe Idana’s assist.

Idana turned scorer when he netted the Bankers’ third goal on the stroke of half-time, slotting the ball into the net following striker Binwell Katinji’s pass. Silver led 3-1 at the break.

When play resumed in the second half, Songwe mounted a meek fight-back which paid dividends when they won a penalty, which Wongani Kamanga converted in the 67th minute following a foul.

That goal provided false hopes for the hosts as the visitors put matters beyond the reach when debutant Emmanuel Allan scored with six minutes remaining on the clock.

Songwe finished the game with 10 men after their player Suzgo Mwakasinga received a red card after a second yellow card for confronting the referee.
