TNM Super League defending champions Silver Strikers scored four minutes into added time to hold Mighty Wanderers 1-1 in a clash of Malawi football titans at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday.
The Nomads, as Wanderers are also called, thought they had finally found the formula of bending the holders when substitute Blessings Mwalilino scored on the dot of 90 minutes. However, the visitors had other ideas. Attacker Chinsinsi Maonga stunned the home crowd on a chilly afternoon of Blantyre.
The first half proved to be a tight affair with nothing much separating the two teams. However, all that changed in the second phase of the game.
Silver, with Chimwemwe Idana dictating midfield tempo, and goalkeeper George Chikooka commanding the goal areas, were the more impressive with free-flowing football. However, this hardly translated to chances created. Emmanuel Allan’s shot, which rolled marginally wide of the foot of the frame, was their clearest scoring chance.
In contrast, Bob Mpinganjira’s team looked effective only in counterattack even though their actual play was disjointed. The hosts were simply unable to string more than five consecutive passes. To their credit, the Nomads attempted their shots from range. That approach nearly worked, but winger Gaddie Chirwa got everything right when he broke clear on the left only to see his bullet bouncing off the upright.
A few minutes later, long-range master Blessings Singini followed suit. However, his stinging long-range effort drew the best from Chikooka who punched the effort.
Just when the game seemed to head for a clueless conclusion, the hosts ignited celebrations.
The Nomads took a deserved lead through substitute Mwalilino some minutes after he had replaced Clement Nyondo to partner Promise Kamwendo upfront.
However, the lead did not last long as some sloppy defending gifted Peter Mgangira’s men a free kick opportunity, which they made use of. Maonga curled in a beautiful freekick, leaving Wanderers’ goalkeeper Chancy Mtete rooted on the goal line.
Wanderers took their tally to 13 points from five games in second place, five points behind leaders Bullets. The Bankers, on the other hand, have nine points and are placed ninth.
In Lilongwe, Creck Sporting Club registered their second league win of the season when they overcame rookies Songwe Border United 2-0 courtesy of Hardy Ng’andu and Hassan Hussein’s goals. In another match, Chifuniro Mpinganjira’s strike was enough to hand Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos a 1-0 victory over Civil Service United.
