Malawi's Ascent Soccer academy has set the record straight regarding its striker Mrisho Mhango's potential move to Hannover 96.

The institution's director, Thom Mkolongo, commented on the speculation regarding the 17-year-old following remarks the Malawi under-20 national football team coach, Millias Pofera, made on Friday that the forward had signed for the German second tier club.

However, such remarks did not go down well with the academy which has released a statement to set the record straight.

"Ascent Soccer wishes to address a number of incorrect stories published in recent days regarding one of our players---Mrisho," the statement reads.

"Over the past 18 months, Mrisho has been fortunate enough to attend training placements at a number of clubs across Europe. As of now, he remains an Ascent Soccer player and, contrary to these reports, Mrisho has not signed or agreed a deal with any club nor has Ascent."

Mkolongo added that FIFA players transfer rules are very clear that minors cannot sign a professional contract and Mrisho is no exception.

Mrisho scored and contributed to the second goal as Malawi started the COSAFA Under-20 Cup with a 2-1 win over Zimbabwe at the Region 5 Games in Namibia on Friday.

The performance excited Pofera who divulged the potential move to the 2 Bundesliga side team.

Mhango is said to have attended trials with the German side in anticipation of signing a contract once he turns 18. The academy has exported many players to clubs in Europe.
