Malawi: Wanderers defeat Karonga, edge closer to title

Malawi giants Mighty Wanderers defeated struggling Karonga United 2-0 at Kamuzu Stadium on a rainy Thursday in Blantyre to close in on the TNM Super League title with a three-point cushion at the summit.

Karonga, who are based in the Northern Region border district, arrived in the Malawi commercial capital while smarting from a 2-0 loss to then leaders FCB Nyasa Big Bullets over the weekend. On the other hand, the Nomads had edged Ekhaya FC at the same venue over the weekend courtesy of Promise Kamwendo’s goal.

However, Bullets went on to stumble to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Moyale Barracks FC on Wednesday to remain on 56 points from 27 games at par with second-placed Wanderers who had a game in hand.

Who scored for Wanderers?

The Nomads made the most of the game in hand. Once again, striker Kamwendo fired the Bob Mpinganjira side ahead after nine minutes before winger Gaddie Chirwa added the second goal 20 minutes later.

With the rain pouring play became a challenge as both teams resorted to long balls. Karonga United remained in 10th place, 22 points behind the leaders.

Mpinganjira’s team will finish the season with assignments against Civo Sporting Club (on Sunday), Songwe Border United and Kamuzu Barracks all at home. Wanderers need six points from a possible nine to seal the title they last won in 2017.

Bullets will wind up the season by playing against Ekhaya FC, Ekwendeni Hammers and Mighty Tigers, all at home.

The seven-time champions Wanderers are three points in front of Bullets and six points away from third-placed holders Silver Strikers, all with three games to wind up the season ending in December.
