Malawi: Wanderers prevail over Songwe, go top

Mighty Wanderers FC climbed back to the TNM Super League driving seat after labouring to a 2-0 victory over relegation-threatened Songwe Borders United in the Malawi elite league on Wednesday.

The Nomads, as Wanderers are also called, leapfrogged previous leaders FCB Nyasa Big Bullets after having defeated them 3-0 on Sunday while holding a one-game in hand advantage. Songwe remain bottom.

After a goalless first half, Wanderers clicked into scoring gear in the last 10 minutes of the match.

Substitute striker Clement Nyondo scored with a header in the 86th minute before Cameroonian Sama Thiery made it 2-0 with a fine strike in added time seven minutes into extra time.

What next for Wanderers after leapfrogging Bullets?

There are nine games to wind up the Super League with the six-time league winners Wanderers and the record 17-time champions Bullets likely to take matters right to the wire.

For now, Wanderers’ next challenge is that of meeting Bullets again in a FDH Cup semifinal at Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday. It will be a third meeting between the two titans this season alone with the Nomads having also won the other match 1-0 before making it a double over their rivals over the weekend.

In another game played on Wednesday, Kamuzu Barracks FC edged second-from the bottom Mzuzu City Hammers 1-0 courtesy of towering Zeliat Nkhoma’s 74th minute effort in Lilongwe.
