Mighty Wanderers finally laid their hands on the elite TNM Super League title for the first time in eight years on Saturday, a reward for a near-perfect season in which they only lost once.
The oldest Blantyre-based founded in 1963, side eased to a home 6-0 victory over Moyale Barracks to seal their seventh league championship for the first time since 2017. The party has just started in the blue side of Blantyre.
Striker Promise Kamwendo scored twice, Isaac Kaliati, Blessings Singini and Muhammad Sulumba struck once and Chisomo Chawanda’s own goal completed the job for Bob Mpinganjira side.
The emphatic season’s 20th victory in 29 games opened an unassailable give-point gap over second placed FCB Nyasa Big Bullets each with a game to go.
Wanderers went onto Kamuzu Stadium holding a three-point gap over the record 17-time champions and Blantyre sworn rivals Bullets, who last won the championship in 2023.
At the end of the 90 minutes, the cause of Wanderers was helped by Bullets ‘ goalless draw against relegated Mighty Tigers also on Saturday.
Outgoing holders Silver Strikers beat Mafco 1-0, but it was not enough for them to defend the title, despite a late push they settled for third place, eight points behind Wanderers with one game remaining.
Wanderers are now guaranteed CAF Champions League football while Tigers, Songwe Border United and Ekwendeni Hammers, who occupy the bottom-three places, will be relegated paving the way for the regional champions’ ascension to the 16-member top-flight league.
