Malawian international Chimwemwe Idana has signed for Zanaco FC in neighbouring Zambia.
The midfielder’s transfer to the Lusaka-based side is a blow to Silver Strikers FC’s TNM Super League title defence. In a statement, Silver confirned that Idana played his last game for the Lilongwe-based side last week. However, the Area 47 team did not state Idana’s contract duration with the Zambian Super League outfit.
“The jersey number 44, with a deft touch, is set to join Zambia’s top-flight side ZANACO FC. He came to Area 47, he conquered, and left an indelible mark in the hearts of many,” the club’s statement reads in part.
The former FCB Nyasa Big Bullets star has followed the footsteps of compatriots Robert Saizi and Chawanangwa Kaonga who are on the books of the seven-time Zambia Super League winners.
The quick-footed midfielder has never had joy with foreign teams. He underwent trials at South Africa’s Sekhukhune United in 2023 but did not make the grade.
He eventually signed for Mbeya City Council FC in the Tanzanian Mainland Premier League but the club instantly loaned him to Silver where he led them to the TNM Super League title last season.
The skilful player now hopes to lead the revival of coach Mumamba Numba’s Lusaka-based side which barely survived relegation last season after finishing fifth from bottom.Idana is probably the playmaker the bankers need to return to the days of glory.
