Mamelodi Sundowns clinch another Betway Premiership title with Chippa United victory

Even the mathematicians have confirmed the latest domestic league title for Mamelodi Sundowns, who clinched their eighth consecutive South African top flight title following Wednesday’s 3-0 victory at Chippa United.

Wednesday’s victory completes another dominant season for South Africa’s perennial champions, who once again secured the title with games to spare despite a respectable challenge from runners-up Orlando Pirates.

Arthur Sales scored a second half brace to put Masandawana beyond reach of hosts Chippa, who fell behind to an Iqraam Rayners goal in the 11th minute. Brazilian playmaker Lucas Ribeiro set up South Africa international Rayners for his 14th league goal of the campaign, leaving him level at the top of the Betway Premiership scoring chart with Ribeiro.

Sales continues to find his stride in South Africa after a poor start at Sundowns left supporters ready to label the Brazilian striker a bust after arriving for over €3 million. The 22-year-old now has 8 goals and 8 assists in league play this season after scoring twice against the Chilli Boys on Wednesday.

Now Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso and his team can turn their full attention to the CAF Champions League final against Egypt’s Pyramids FC which begins with the first leg on May 24 in Pretoria, South Africa. Before the first leg, Sundowns conclude their domestic league campaign on Sunday at home against Magesi FC.
