Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teko Modise has advised the club’s technical team to manage the players’ workload ahead of next season’s Betway Premiership campaign.
The Brazilians had a busy campaign last season where they won the South African domestic top flight and finished as the runners-up in the 2024/25 CAF Champions League to Egyptian side Pyramids FC.
Masandawana recently returned home after featuring in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Coach Miguel Cardoso’s men were eliminated in the first round after failing to win their final match in Group C – accumulating four points from a possible nine.
With just a few weeks left before the 2025/26 Betway Premiership kicks off, Sundowns players will need to get as much rest as possible to be in shape for the new campaign.
Modise has posited that the players workload must be properly managed as fatigue will likely take a toll on them when the season begins.
“It’s going to be a long season. I think it’s going to be longer than the previous one so it’s a privilege to be in such a space where you are regularly playing football in big tournaments,” Modise said on Sundowns’ Pitchside podcast.
“Other footballers around the world envy you and the space that you are in. Yes, it’s a lot of load that has been on the players but it’s expected when you are playing for a team of Sundowns calibre. Yes, it’s going to be tough and it will be a short stint when they come back for pre-season.
“I’m expecting the technical team and management to be mindful of the load that the players have had,” Modise added.
“And be cognisant of the fact we’re going to have a quick season and a break again where a core of the players are going to go to the national team and it’s going to be very tricky.”
Sundowns have a tall order next season with the MTN 8, the Betway Premiership and the CAF Champions League on the schedule with many of their players also set to feature for Bafana Bafana in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September as well as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in December.
