Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim has jumped to the defence of under fire goalkeeper, Andre Onana after their loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the UEFA Europa League on Wednesday, May 21.

Pape Matar Sarr sent in a perfect cross which dinged in between Luke Shaw and Brennan Johnson with the Spurs forward prodding the ball behind Onana for the only goal of the game in the 42nd minute at the San Mames in Bilbao.

The Cameroon goalkeeper has come under severe criticism after he failed to deal with the onrushing effort by the Wales international but Amorim has defended the efforts of the former Ajax safest pair of hands.

“There is some time that we didn’t create situations, now is not that time. Now we are creating situation, if you look at the opportunity that we had, it’s different players so it is not a problem of one guy,” Amorim said after the match

“We are not scoring goals, the goalkeeper [Andre Onana] did a great job, of course I believe in my players and it is my job to improve my players.

“I arrived in January and it was not possible to make a lot of changes because of the problems we have to deal with that and then I had to assess the team so the problem is not just player but we are missing chances with all the players.” He added.

The loss means Andre Onana will not play with Manchester United in Europe next season as they currently sit 16th on the English Premier League table with 39 points, one better than Spurs from 37 matches. The defeat means Manchester United will go this season without silverware.

The last round of premier league matches come up on Sunday May 25 with the Red Devils hosting Aston Villa at the Old Trafford.
