Manafov returns to Azerbaijan as Gavin Hunt trims Stellenbosch squad

The Gavin Hunt era at Stellenbosch FC is beginning to take a very specific shape. The Winelands club confirmed on Saturday that Azerbaijan defender Turan Manafov has brought his South African stay to a premature end, returning to his home country to join Gabala FC on loan for the remainder of the season.

A Short-Lived Stay for the Azerbaijan Star Manafov

Manafov arrived at the start of the 2025/26 campaign as part of Steve Barker’s recruitment drive. However, following the recent coaching transition, the 27-year-old found himself on the periphery of the squad.

The Azerbaijan international departs after making 10 appearances, featuring in the Betway Premiership, the Carling Knockout, and the club’s CAF Confederation Cup journey.

“Stellenbosch FC can confirm that Turan Manafov has returned to Azerbaijan… The Club wishes Turan every success during his loan spell,” the club announced.

The Hunt for Quality: “January is the Worst Window”

While Manafov heads back to Azerbaijan, coach Gavin Hunt is busy clearing space for more local reinforcements. Despite already securing high-profile names like Tshegofatso Mabasa, Kobamelo Kodisang, and Mosa Lebusa, Hunt insists the business is far from over.

Speaking after a narrow 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United, Hunt was candid about the lack of depth in his attacking department.

“I am trying. I think we were short upfront, as you can see,” Hunt admitted. “I played Devin [Titus] upfront tonight, and he was magnificent. But we only have two strikers and a few wide players. We are looking, and we are working hard.”
