Swiss defender Manuel Akanji has spoken of his pride in his Nigerian roots as he settles into life at Inter Milan, following his summer move from Manchester City on loan with an obligation to buy.
The 30-year-old was born in Wiesendangen, Switzerland, to a Swiss mother and Nigerian father. On his left arm, Akanji carries a tattoo of an eagle – a personal tribute to his Nigerian heritage.
“This eagle represents the Nigerian national team, and underneath it is a football,” Akanji told Inter TV. “It’s something I always carry with me. I play for Switzerland, but I’m very proud of my Nigerian roots – they’re always part of me.”
The defender revealed that he has not been able to travel to Nigeria frequently in recent years due to his professional commitments. “When I was younger, I went there three or four times,” he explained. “But now it’s more difficult to go back because of the football calendar and also the weather conditions.”
Since his arrival, Akanji has quickly become an important figure in Cristian Chivu’s plans. He has already featured in five matches across all competitions, playing a central role in Inter’s strong start in Europe, where the Nerazzurri won their first two Champions League league phase games.
Domestically, Inter have collected nine points from their opening five Serie A fixtures in a start that can be described as “unstable” compared to the club’s lofty ambitions.
