Marc Brys explains Choupo-Moting and Ondoa absences from Cameroon squad for June friendlies

Cameroon coach Marc Brys defended his decision not to summon Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Fabrice Ondoa. The Belgian coach is preparing his squad for friendlies against Uganda and Equatorial Guinea.

The absence of MLS-bound Choupo-Moting sparked debate after the striker’s strong form with Red Bulls (10 goals in 17 MLS games). Brys said he made the decision based on sporting merit and the future of the Indomitable Lions. “It is true that he scored 10 goals in MLS. I follow his performances, which are very good, but I made a sporting choice,” claimed Brys.

He further highlighted the age of the former PSG and Bayern Munich striker after first praising him. “He’s a good player, a good person. But a coach must also think about the future, and Eric Maxim is 36 years old.”

Brys was equally direct when speaking about 2017 Africa Cup of Nations-winning goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa. The Latvia-based goalie has been overlooked by Brys once again. “Fabrice Ondoa is also a good goalkeeper, but I am satisfied with André Onana’s performance.”

Brys often finds himself at the center of controversy due to his ongoing rift with FECAFOOT president Samuel Eto’o.
