Marvelous Nakamba opens lid on Sheffield Wednesday move

Zimbabwe midfielder Marvelous Nakamba has opened the lid on his move from Luton Town to Sheffield Wednesday in the English Championship.

The 32-year-old Nakamba joined Owls as a free agent on transfer deadline day following the mutual termination of his contract at Luton Town this year.

The former Club Brugge midfielder made his debut last weekend as a substitute against Swansea City, and he will be aiming for a start at home to Millwall on Saturday.

Nakamba left Luton Town on mutual grounds

The Zimbabwe captain said: “At first I thought it was a massive club with good history, rich history [and] also when I heard I can have the chance to join them I spoke to my family about the club and they were really happy and they told me about the history of the club, my parents told me the history about the club,” Marvelous Nakamba told All Wednesday.

“For me it is to fight for the challenge, what people have been through so for me it was like a challenge to be there like a family to fight for the challenge and also very happy to join Sheffield Wednesday.

Nakamba who played three matches as Zimbabwe exited the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a one point in Group B expressed pride in representing his the Warriors.

He has managed 38 caps for Zimbabwe

“I feel proud in representing my country and it was one of the dreams to represent your nation and since I started playing for the national team, we’ve doing our best to qualify for the AFCON and with the young players that we have, there is still future for the national team to do well in future AFCONS,” Marvelous Nakamba told All Wednesday.

Nakamba began his career at Bantu Rovers before moving to France with Nancy with subsequent stints at Vitesse and Club Brugge.

His blistering form drew interest from English Premier League club Aston Villa in 2019 where he spent three seasons before transferring to Luton Town on loan before regularizing the deal in 2023.

He was released by Luton Town on mutual consent after three seasons and his journey with Sheffield Wednesday is expected to be a turnaround in his career having made 38 caps for Zimbabwe.
