Former Ghana defender Masahudu Alhassan appointed as Anzio Calcio’s player-coach

Former Ghana defender Masahudu Alhassan has been appointed as the head coach of Italian Serie D club Anzio Calcio 1924.

Alhassan, who spent a major part of his football career in the Italian Serie A with clubs like Genoa, Udinese, Perugia, Latina and Novara, will serve as a player-coach after joining the side from Atletico Pontinia.

The club took to their Facebook page to announce the role handed to the former Black Stars left-back: “Alhassan Masahudu is the new head coach of Anzio. The uncertainty surrounding the team’s technical leadership has now been resolved, with Masahudu set to guide the squad through to the end of the season,” the club wrote.

“The club has opted for an internal solution, placing its trust in the former Udinese player of Ghanaian nationality. Already part of the Anzio squad as a quality addition, Masahudu also holds a UEFA coaching licence and will now put his experience at the service of the club in this new role.”

Alhassan, 33, has made six appearances out of a possible 20 games as Anzio sit 14th in the Italian Serie D Group G table with 23 points.

He has been capped 8 times by Ghana senior team between 2011 and 2012 after featuring for the U-20 at the 2011 Africa Youth Championship in Libya.

Alhassan was named to Ghana’s provisional 25-man squad for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, making the final team for the tournament in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
