CAF has given the green light to the Mauritania Football Federation (FFRIM) to join the Union of North African Football (UNAF). Mauritania were previously part of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B.
FFRIM has been working to change its zonal affiliation since 2020. Under FFRIM president Ahmed Yahya, Mauritania showed a desire to leave WAFU for UNAF.
UNAF accepted the proposal after CAF approved it during an executive committee meeting in Rabat, Morocco, on December 20. Mauritania have become the sixth member of UNAF, joining Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya.
Mauritania have been competing in UNAF junior competitions as a guest since 2021. The country was eager to join UNAF, as the federation sees it as a step forward in developing football in the nation. UNAF was established in 2005 as a zonal union of five North African nations.
It stages competitions for member associations in different categories and is one of the five zonal unions affiliated with CAF.
