Sudanese giants Al Hilal Omdurman faced a surprising challenge from bottom half side Nzeidane on Friday but prevailed with a 2-1 victory in their Mauritania Super D1 clash.
Sudan national team stars Yaser Mozamil and Mohamed Abdelrahman scored for Hilal who needed a late goal from the talismanic Abdelrahman to overcome Nzeidane, a team promoted from the West African nation's second tier for the current campaign. After defeating Nzeidane 5-0 earlier in the season, a disastrous start saw Hilal backup goalkeeper Mohamed Kidiaba mishandle a corner kick directed on goal inside five minutes.
But the CAF Champions League quarterfinalists fought back and were able to level the match through Mozamil, who finished after a scramble in the Nzeidane penalty area just before halftime. Late on, Hilal earned a penalty kick and captain Abdelrahman finished with flair by chipping a Panenka spot kick down the middle to win the match.
Hilal continue to move closer and closer to the summit of the Super D1 table with only defending champions FC Nouadhibou to catch. Their next match is in two weeks against Sudanese rivals Al Merriekh who are also competing in the Super D1 this season due to the war in Sudan. Hilal will then face Tevragh-Zeina before beginning their CAF Champions League quarterfinal clash with reigning African champions Al Ahly of Egypt.
