The new addition of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) continued to be the story from the opening day of the 2025 COSAFA Cup on Wednesday as Zimbabwe and Mauritius battled to a 0-0 draw in their opening match.
It was a strong performance from Mauritius who called in several European-based players for the competition including experienced defensive leader Lindsay Rose of Greek club Aris FC.
After a fierce first half battle that saw opportunities for both teams, halftime arrived soon after VAR’s first intervention when Zimbabwe midfielder Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya’s apparent goal was ruled offsides.
While Zimbabwe could perhaps say they edged the first half, the Warriors came under increased pressure in the second half but VAR saved them from a shock defeat. Mauritius attacker Stephan De Robillard finished after Zimbabwe failed to clear a free kick but after a long VAR review, it was determined that an inadvertent handball was evidence enough to cancel the goal.
Mauritius continue their campaign in Group A on Saturday against Mozambique, who defeated hosts South Africa earlier on Wednesday. Zimbabwe will clash with regional rivals Bafana Bafana on the same day in what appears to be a competitive group.
