Ghanaian defender Maxwell Woledzi signs for Nashville SC

Highly-rated Ghanaian defender Maxwell Woledzi has signed for American side Nashville SC after completing a switch from Norwegian top-flight club Fredrikstad FK.

The 24-year-old is a product of Ghana’s Right to Dream Academy which has groomed stars such as Tottenham Hotspur’s Mohammed Kudus.

The centre-back has signed a two-year contract running until the 2028 season with an option for 2029, effectively becoming Nashville’s first winter catch. The transfer fee is reported to be €1.3 million.

Nashville SC president of soccer operations and general manager, Mike Jacobs, has since explained why they recruited the centre back.

“Maxwell is a tremendous player and leader who will be a great addition to our club. We are excited to be able to add him to our group for the 2026 season,” Jacobs told his club’s website.

What we know about Woledzi

Woledzi excelled after moving to Fredrikstad in 2023, as he featured in 88 games across all competitions and led them to the 2024 Norwegian Football Cup.

The Ghanaian earned a place in the 2024 Eliteserien Team of the Year and scooped Fredrikstad’s 2025 Player of the Year accolade to cement his reputation as the Norwegian club’s legend. Woledzi’s time in Europe included a stint with Nordsjaelland with whom he made 33 appearances.

The Danish Superliga side, which is affiliated to the Right to Dream network with 2025 MLS expansion club San Diego FC. The defender also had a stint in Portugal where he was on the books of Vitória Guimarães SC B.

Nashville won their first-ever silverware this season, the 2025 US Open Cup, and settled for a sixth-place finish in the Eastern Conference.
