Maza nominated for best assist after Leverkusen’s shock win over Manchester City

The official UEFA Champions League account has shortlisted Algerian international Ibrahim Maza—the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder—for the Best Assist award on the day one of League Phase Matchday 5.

Maza delivered a standout performance on Tuesday night, participating in guiding his German side to a stunning upset over hosts Manchester City, securing a 2–0 victory at the Etihad Stadium. The Algerian star provided an assist for Leverkusen’s second goal, sending in a cross that Patrik Schick headed past the City goalkeeper.

The Champions League’s official account on X selected three nominees for the best assist of the night, with Maza leading the list. He will compete against Timothy Weah, for his assist in Marseille’s clash with Newcastle, and Pascal Groß, who delivered a key pass for Borussia Dortmund against Villarreal.

Maza’s nomination adds to the good reputation of the African players in Europe, as he continues to impress with Leverkusen and this time in the biggest European club competition.
