Kylian Mbappé, the star of Real Madrid and the France national team, has shared new insights into his African heritage, highlighting his Cameroonian background while expressing a growing connection to his Algerian roots.
Speaking on The Bridge Show, Mbappé revealed: “I grew up more in the Cameroonian culture than the Algerian one. I was closer to my Cameroonian family.” However, he noted that this dynamic has evolved over time, adding: “As the years have passed, I’ve become much closer to my Algerian family.”
Despite never visiting Algeria, Mbappé admitted he is eager to make the trip, addressing public perception around his connection to the country: “People think I don’t care because I’ve never been there, but I’ve visited Cameroon many times.”
Mbappé spoke about his international allegiance, saying: “I think I’d choose to play for Cameroon, and I’d send Ethan to play for Algeria.” His younger brother, Ethan Mbappé, currently plays for Lille OSC.
On the pitch, Real Madrid star continues to make history. He recently scored in a friendly against Brazil, bringing his tally to 56 international goals—just one shy of equaling Olivier Giroud’s all-time record of 57 goals for France.
Looking ahead, Mbappe is set to lead France in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, where they will compete in Group I alongside Senegal national team, Norway national team, and Iraq national team.
He previously guided France to World Cup glory in 2018 and came agonizingly close to repeating the feat in 2022, scoring a historic hat-trick in the final against Argentina, only to finish as runner-up.
