Mdaka hails Amajita’s growth and character in AFCON semi-final triumph over Nigeria

Following the impressive victory over Nigeria, which secured their spot in the AFCON final, Amajita coach Raymond Mdaka lauded his team’s remarkable growth and unwavering character throughout the tournament.

Tylon Smith’s second-half header from a Neo Rapoo corner kick propelled South Africa to a 1-0 semi-final win against Nigeria at the Suez Canal Stadium on Thursday, booking their place in the CAF U-20 AFCON Egypt 2025 final.

The defeat dashes Nigeria’s hopes of securing a record-extending eighth U-20 AFCON title.

After starting their AFCON campaign with a loss to Egypt, Raymond Mdaka’s South Africa displayed resilience, progressing to their first final in 28 years. Their previous final appearance was in 1997 against Morocco.

An appreciative Mdaka credited his team’s consistent growth and strong character.

“Yes, another win, congratulations to the boys,” said Mdaka. “What a good job, good character, very disciplined, sticking to the agreements, tactical, technical. We really appreciate it.

“As much it was not easy, our boys are growing in each and every match, growing in character and growing in everything. Thank you so much and well done, boys, and well done for the country.”

The team also received congratulations from SAFA President Danny Jordaan, as stated by SAFA.

Amajita will shift their focus to Sunday’s final against Morocco, where they will seek their first continental title, having already qualified for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
