Medeama coach Ibrahim Tanko eyes Ghana Premier League title next season

Medeama SC’s quest to finish on a high in the Ghana Premier League last season fell short after concluding the 2024/25 term in 8th with 50 points from 34 matches.

Notwithstanding the failure to reach the top four, the Yellow and Mauve were a delight to watch under the guidance of ex-Ghana international Ibrahim Tanko.

The former Borussia Dortmund attacker successfully shaped the two-time Ghana FA Cup winners into a formidable side but their quality was not enough to win them any silverware at the end of last season. Tanko, who joined Medeama from now relegated Accra Lions, has set his sights on the Premier League title next season.

“When I came in, the goal was to bring stability and success. We missed out on the top four, and that’s disappointing. But we’re not coming back next season to chase the top four, we’re coming for the title,” Tanko told Graphic Sports.

“There won’t be massive changes, but we need to reassess. Players who are surplus to requirements will either be offloaded or sent out on loan, so we can make space for the right additions.

“We have a good group of players, but we need to add more quality. A centre-back and a striker are definitely priorities,” he said. “The rest will come from the talented young players we already have at the club.”

“I’m here to build something strong and lasting,” he declared. “Next season is not just about improvement, it’s about going for the ultimate prize.”

Medeama recently parted ways with six players, a move that paved way for the 47-year-old coach to revitalize his squad for the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League which is tentatively set to kick off next month.
