Marseille U-Turn: Medhi Benatia withdraws resignation

Medhi Benatia has performed a dramatic U-turn, withdrawing his resignation to remain as Olympique de Marseille’s sporting director in a deal that keeps him at the Vélodrome until June 2026.

The Moroccan international had initially sent shockwaves through the French club on Sunday, February 15, by penning a lengthy letter to supporters announcing his departure. However, following a high-stakes intervention by club owner Frank McCourt, Benatia has committed his future to the Ligue 1 giants in an expanded capacity.

The PSG Fallout and McCourt’s Intervention

The seeds of Benatia’s initial exit were sown last Monday when he cited a “toxic climate” at the club following a humiliating 5–0 “Le Classique” defeat to arch-rivals Paris Saint-Germain [PSG]. The fallout from that loss appeared to be the final straw for the former centre-back, but McCourt reportedly viewed Benatia as the only man capable of stabilising the ship.

According to L’Équipe, the American owner has not only convinced Benatia to stay but has effectively handed him the keys to the club’s sporting department. “Under the supervision of Medhi Benatia, the appointment of a new coach will be announced soon. My ambition for the club remains intact,” McCourt stated, throwing his weight behind the director while facing his own pressure from the fanbase.

A Shift in Power: Medhi Benatia

The new agreement signals a significant shift in the hierarchy at Marseille. Benatia’s role has been significantly expanded, effectively reducing the sporting responsibilities of club president Pablo Longoria.

The immediate priority for the newly empowered Benatia is filling the dugout vacuum left by Roberto De Zerbi. With the Italian’s departure leaving the team in limbo, Benatia is reportedly eyeing a bold move for Senegalese tactician Habib Beye, who is high on the shortlist to lead the club’s new era.
