Meet little-known South African coaches bound for AFCON

South African coaches are set to make their presence felt at the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Morocco.

Beyond the players, South African coaches will grace the competition, including Hugo Broos’ trusted lieutenant assistant Helman Mkhalele.

Apart from the 1996 AFCON winner, there are also other South African coaches bound for Morocco ahead of the tournament.

South African goalkeeper coach Grant Johnson is another important member of the coaching panel for Broos.

Across the borders, Botswana’s Morena Ramoreboli is the other notable South African heading to AFCON.

He ascended to the Zebras’ throne after building his resume with Jwaneng Galaxy in the CAF Champions League.

Soon after being handed a full-time two-year contract following a successful interim tenure, the former Bafana Bafana’s COSAFA Cup coaches shared his thoughts on the prospects of facing South Africa at the AFCON finals.

“Be honest with you, I would like us to face them at knock-out stage of the tournament. If it happens in the group stage, that’s fine too. They are our neighbors, and it will be a good challenge,” he told CAF website.

Which other South African coach is heading to AFCON?

Another unfamiliar South African face at AFCON will be Ronald Dumisani Moroka.

The South African will be on the bench for Zimbabwe working under coach Mario Marinica.

Moroka works as the Warriors analyst, providing Marinica insights on opponents’ strengths and weakness.

The duo built their work relationship back in the days while the Romanian was in charge of Black Leopards.

Marinica also worked with Moroka in a similar capacity while in charge of Liberia until earlier this year.

The 57-year-old South African is experienced having served as Marimo Gallants assistant coach, among other jobs in the PSL.
