Mesay Teferi leaves Ethiopian national team for Wolayta Dicha

Mesay Teferi’s tenure as head coach of the Ethiopia national team has officially ended. Ethiopian Premier League side Wolayta Dicha has confirmed his return to the club as their new head coach.

Teferi has been leading the Waliyas for the past year after replacing Gebremedhin Haile at the helm. Under his guidance, Ethiopia played in the qualifying tournaments for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Ethiopia failed to qualify for any of the tournaments under his watch. Pan-Africa Football understands that the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) has not offered a contract renewal to the former Ethiopian youth international. The EFF is expected to name a new coach before 2026.

Teferi now has a new home as he makes a second homecoming to Wolayta Dicha. The Sodo-based side started the new season poorly. They sacked their head coach, Geberekritos Birara, after four games and were eliminated early from the Ethiopian Cup. Teferi broke into the Ethiopian football scene after helping Wolayta Dicha achieve promotion to the top flight. He also led the team to their first-ever Ethiopian Cup crown during his tenure.

Teferi is expected to sign a contract that runs until the end of the season. His main task will be to help Wolayta Dicha out of the relegation zone, as they sit 19th with two points from six league games.
