Malawian club champions Mighty Wanderers have likened new signing Alex Kambirinya to former Kaizer Chiefs defender Eric Mathoho.
The Malawian club’s director David Kanyenda made the comparison after the unveiling of the centre-back, who has inked a three-year deal with the Nomads from relegated fellow Super League side Mighty Tigers.
Writing on his Facebook page after posting his photographs with the new arrival, the former Nomads general secretary suggested that Kambirinya’s striking resemblance with Mathoho, who is also called Tower, extends to his physical appearance.
Mathoho retired from Chiefs in 2023 after serving them for 11 seasons, featuring 267 times (256 starts + 11 substitute appearances) and scoring 22 goals. The former Bafana Bafana star helped AmaKhosi win the league championship, Nedbank Cup double and MTN 8 trophy.
The Nomads’ official is an avid follower of South Africa’s Premier Soccer League he often travels to the Rainbow Nation to watch high-profile games, including for Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
“Reminds me of former Kaiser Chiefs defensive stalwart Eric Mulomowandau Mathoho in terms of height, complexion, position and even looks. This lad is a tower with unique physical attributes suitable for CAF football,” he said.
Kanyenda then lauded the quality of Kambirinya, saying his inclusion in the Malawi national team squad speaks a lot about him.
“If you need a reminder of his credentials, then look no further than the fact that he’s already in Flames camp,” the Wanderers director added.
The up-and-coming player is the latest defensive addition to the Nomads who also signed left-back Dalitso Nahipa from Creck Sporting Club in February and former Moyale Barracks striker Lameck Mithi.
