Tanzania Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, has said coach Miguel Gamondi will officially sign a contract to coach the national football team, Taifa Stars, any time from now.
Makonda said Gamondi has earned the contract after showing high potential in the recent AFCON tournament held in Morocco.

Minister Makonda was speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam on February 9, 2026, immediately after inspecting the renovation of the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
“He (Gamondi) has shown he can do the job, he did a wonderful job during the AFCON in Morocco, and we believe he can take us far if we retain him as the head coach,” said Makonda.
“We have opened discussions over the same, and the coach will be handed a fresh start to handle the team as far as the 2027 AFCON that we will co-host in East African alongside neighbours Kenya, and Uganda.”
Gamondi led Taifa Stars to the Round of 16 of the AFCON in Morocco for the first time in Tanzanian history as an interim coach. He had come in to replace Hemed Suleiman, who had guided Tanzania to the same tournament.
Tanzania’s journey in 2025 AFCON ended after losing 1-0 against hosts Morocco in the Round of 16. Their first match saw Taifa Stars lost 2-1 against Nigeria, before they drew 1-1 against Uganda.
The East African nation later finished Tunisia, who they forced to a 1-1 draw. By reaching the knockout stages, Tanzania made history after they ended a 45-year-wait since their maiden appearance in the AFCON.
Tanzania had been trying since 1980 to advance beyond the group stage, and has yet to win in 12 matches spanning four appearances. They squeezed into the Round of 16 after two draws and one loss.
Tunisia finished second in Group C with four points, five less than table-topper Nigeria. Tanzania pipped Angola on goals scored for one of the four places reserved for third-placed teams.
The government has decided to officially hire him to lead the team in its bid to win the 2027 AFCON championship, where Tanzania will host the tournament.
