Miguel Gamondi signs permanent deal to handle Tanzania

As exclusively revealed by Pan-Africa Football six days ago, Argentine coach Miguel Gamondi has officially signed a two-year contract to coach the Tanzania national team Taifa Stars.

Speaking at a brief signing ceremony for the contract, the Minister for Information, Arts, Culture and Sports, Paul Makonda, said Gamondi deserved the contract after showing his ability in the recent AFCON 2025 tournament held in Morocco.

During the AFCON, Gamondi led Taifa Stars to the Round of 16 for the first time in Tanzanian history as an interim coach.

Gamondi guided in 2025 AFCON

“The government has now decided to officially hire him to lead the team in its efforts to win the AFCON 2027 championship, where Tanzania will host the tournament,” said Makonda.

Gamondi had come in to replace Hemed Suleiman, who had guided Tanzania to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.

Tanzania’s journey in 2025 AFCON ended after losing 1-0 against hosts Morocco in the Round of 16. Their first match saw Taifa Stars lost 2-1 against Nigeria, before they drew 1-1 against Uganda.

The East African nation later came up against Tunisia, whom they forced to a 1-1 draw. By reaching the knockout stages, Tanzania made history after they ended a 45-year-wait since their maiden appearance in the AFCON.

Tanzania made history in Morocco

Tanzania had been trying since 1980 to advance beyond the group stage, and has yet to win in 12 matches spanning four appearances. They squeezed into the Round of 16 after two draws and one loss.

Tunisia finished second in Group C with four points, five less than table-topper Nigeria. Tanzania pipped Angola on goals scored for one of the four places reserved for third-placed teams.

The government has decided to officially hire him to lead the team in its bid to win the 2027 AFCON championship, where Tanzania will host the tournament.

Brief history of Gamondi

Born in Olavarría, Gamondi played for local club Ferrocarril Sud and managed several clubs in Argentina, including Ferro Carril Sud, Racing, El Fortín, San Martín de Tucumán and Racing Club de Avellaneda. In 2000, he moved to Africa to join Oscar Fulloné as an assistant coach to the Libyan side Al-Ahly.

He became assistant coach to Fulloné in the Burkina Faso national football team in December 2001 and later became assistant coach at ASEC Mimosas, Wydad Casablanca, Espérance Sportive de Tunis, and Étoile du Sahel.

In February 2025, he was appointed manager of Al Nasr of Libya, but his contract was terminated after five matches.
