MLS: Mamadou Fofana marks first goal in USA with New England Revolution victory

Tension was high at Foxboro Stadium on Saturday with hosts New England Revolution keeping a narrow lead, but Mamadou Fofana’s second half goal sealed an eventual 3-0 victory over CF Montreal in Major League Soccer (MLS) action.

The Malian got on the end of an excellent free kick service from Luca Langoni to volley in the second goal and put the hosts out of reach in Massachusetts. He also contributed to a clean sheet performance over the Canadian club.

Langoni put the Revs ahead in the 6th minute but the early lead inspired the visitors from Canada to increase their efforts. The home team controlled the first half but after the interval, Montreal began to apply heavy pressure and only the frame of the goal kept Ghanaian forward Prince Owusu and his team from leveling the match on several occasions.

Fofana’s goal helps Revolution to a second MLS home victory in 2026

But an unexpected source provided the crucial second goal to allow the home supporters to breath easier. It is Fofana’s first goal in Major League Soccer since joining ahead of last season.

A member of Mali’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations squad in Morocco, Fofana joined the Revolution from Amiens to boost the club’s poor defense alongside Ecuadorian defender Brayan Ceballos. While the team struggled last season, the two imposing defenders continue to build their chemistry and the Revolution look far more formidable early in the 2026 campaign.

With two victories and three defeats through five matches, there is still plenty of work to do but Fofana and the Revs are showing the right signs at home. Next Saturday, they will look to earn back-to-back victories for the first time this season against DC United.
