Mngqithi on what makes Deon Hotto exceptional

Lamontville Golden Arrows FC coach Manqoba Mngqithi has explained why Deon Hotto is a perfect role model for up-and-coming footballers in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) of South Africa.

Since arriving in Johannesburg over a decade ago, the Namibian has shown remarkable consistency and professionalism in the top-tier PSL otherwise also called Betway Premiership.

Unlike other expatriate players who get swayed by the glitz and glamour of Soweto, the winger has focused on the ball and avoided off-the-field distractions that chasing women and beer can bring into a footballer’s career.

Why Manqoba Mngqithi is big fan of Deon Hotto

It is on that premise that Mngqithi, a firm disciplinarian, regards Hotto as a figure that young PSL players should look up to if they want to make it big in their careers.

Sowetan newspaper quoted the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach as having made the remarks following a 5-0 loss to Pirates in a Betway Premiership match on Tuesday.

The coach said the heavy defeat served as a lesson to his Golden Arrows’ youthful players, especially how the Namibian performed.

“There are very nice lessons that we have learnt,” the coach said.

“It is so strange. I always make examples with Hotto when I talk to my players because I think Hotto is a good footballer, but his strengths are his intensity…the way he works, the way he runs is a lesson for a younger player that is still earning nothing, that has not achieved anything.”

The 34-year-old joined the Buccaneers in 2020 following the disbandment of BidVest Wits FC and has now reached over 300 appearances with Pirates.

In March, Pirates congratulated the Namibian international “on reaching 300 appearances. A milestone built on consistency and dedication.”
