Mohamed Salah becomes Africa’s all-time top scorer in World Cup qualifiers

Mohamed Salah has added another milestone to his legendary career, becoming the all-time leading scorer in African World Cup qualifying history.

The Egyptian captain reached the record after scoring twice in Egypt’s 3-0 win over Djibouti on Wednesday, taking his tally to 20 goals in FIFA World Cup qualification matches.

Salah surpassed a group of African legends — Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast), Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon), Moumouni Dagano (Burkina Faso), and Islam Slimani (Algeria) — who each previously held the record with 18 goals.

The Liverpool star first surpassed the record when he found the net early in the match, before extending his lead with a well-played chipped finish in the closing stages to help seal Egypt’s victory and qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

This achievement further cements Mohamed Salah’s status as one of Africa’s greatest-ever footballers.
