Mohamed Salah edges closer to being Egypt’s all-time top scorer

Mohamed Salah continued his pursuit of history with the Egyptian national team after finding the net in Friday’s World Cup qualifying clash against Ethiopia at Cairo International Stadium.

ُThe Pharaohs defeated Ethiopia 2-0 at Cairo International Stadium in the seventh round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Salah opened the scoring in the 40th minute from the penalty spot, giving the Pharaohs the lead and raising his international tally to 61 goals.

With the strike, Salah strengthened his position as Egypt’s second-highest scorer of all time, moving closer to the legendary Hossam Hassan, who tops the charts with 68 goals. Hassan, now the national team’s head coach, remains only seven goals ahead of the Liverpool forward.

This record seems close to the Egyptian star with 3 games remaining in the qualifiers and the 2025 AFCON being held next December.

With this victory, Egypt maintained their lead in Group A and edged closer to securing a place at the 2026 World Cup.

Group A standings – World Cup Qualifiers:

Position Team Played Points
1 Egypt 7 19
2 Burkina Faso 7 14
3 Sierra Leone 7 9
4 Guinea-Bissau 7 7
5 Ethiopia 7 6
6 Djibouti 7 1
