Liverpool and Egypt national team star Mohamed Salah appears set to take a new direction in his club career after expressing doubts that he will renew his contract with Liverpool.
In comments to Sky Sports, the 32-year-old revealed that long discussed contract negotiations have broken down with less than six months remaining on his deal with the current English Premier League leaders. Clubs are now free to make offers to bring in Salah on a free transfer when the 2024-25 season concludes and Salah did not have any good news for Liverpool supporters.
"There is no progress there. We are far away...so, we just need to wait and see," Salah said to Sky Sports. In response to a question about whether the ongoing campaign would be his last with Liverpool, Salah said: "So far, yes. It's the last six months."
Salah is maintaining a strong claim to being the most in-form player at the highest levels of world football. The Egyptian has 17 goals and 13 assists in 18 Premier League matches along with 2 goals and 4 assists in 6 UEFA Champions League games. On pace to have his best statistical campaign since his first season with Liverpool in 2017-18, Salah has no shortage of potential suitors despite his advancing age.
However the potential off-pitch distraction has only made his focus sharper on the pitch. Liverpool are six points clear of nearest competitors Arsenal at the top of the table and have not lost a match since mid-September against Nottingham Forest. Liverpool will return to action for 2025 on Sunday when they host rivals Manchester United.
