Thabiso Monyane, a familiar face at Orlando Pirates for over a decade, has broken his silence following his recent departure from the Soweto giants.
The 25-year-old right-back, whose contract is set to expire at the end of June, was released by the Buccaneers along with teammate Paseka Mako, as announced by the club on Friday, 6 June.
Monyane's 13-year "marriage" with Pirates began at the tender age of 12. He rose through the club's ranks, eventually being promoted to the senior team in July 2019. During his time with the Sea Robbers, he accumulated over 90 appearances, showcasing his talent as a highly-regarded right-back. He also won a handful of trophies, including the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup.
However, Monyane's journey was often hampered by persistent injury struggles, which significantly limited his opportunities to cement a regular starting berth. His playing time further diminished during the 2024/25 season, particularly following the arrival of Deano van Rooyen from Stellenbosch FC.
In an emotional statement, he expressed profound gratitude to the Pirates leadership for their unwavering faith throughout his formative years and professional career. He credited the club with shaping not only his footballing abilities but also his personal growth.
"As I close this chapter of my life, I’m filled with a mix of emotions – sadness to leave behind the only football home I’ve ever known, but also excitement for the new journey ahead," Monyane shared on his Instagram account. "Joining the institution at 12 to 25, this club has been my everything. I’ve grown as a player, but more importantly, as a person."
He reflected on the shared triumphs and enduring bonds: "I’m grateful for the trophies we’ve won, the memories we’ve created, and the friendships that will last a lifetime."
Monyane also extended heartfelt thanks to the passionate Pirates faithful. "To the fans, thank you for your unwavering support. Your cheers, chants, constructive criticism, and passion fueled me every step of the way. I’ll never forget the electric atmosphere you created on match days."
His appreciation stretched to all facets of the club: "To the chairman, staff, technical team, and players, past and present, thank you for your hard work, dedication, and camaraderie. You’ve all played a role in shaping me into the player I am today."
Concluding his message, Monyane affirmed, "As I embark on my new journey, I’ll carry the lessons, values, and memories from this club with me always. I’ll be forever grateful for the opportunity to represent this amazing club and be part of its history. Thank you, Orlando Pirates, for an unforgettable 13 years."
Now a free agent after receiving his clearance from the Happy People, Monyane is available to join any team of his choosing.
