Marseille and Morocco defender Nayef Aguerd undergoes surgery

Olympique de Marseille have announced that Moroccan defender Nayef Aguerd will undergo surgery to treat a persistent lower abdominal injury.

In an official statement published on the club’s website, Marseille confirmed that the defender will have surgery on Thursday to address a sports hernia that has been troubling him in recent weeks.

The club explained that Aguerd had continued playing despite suffering from increasing pain and discomfort, which eventually reached a level where he could no longer continue under those conditions.

Despite the conservative treatments provided by the club’s medical staff, the condition worsened, making surgery unavoidable, according to the club statement.

Following the operation, Aguerd will begin a rehabilitation program under the supervision of Marseille’s medical staff as he works toward returning to the pitch.

The club added that the Moroccan international has shown great determination and will do everything possible to return as quickly as possible in order to help Marseille during the decisive phase of the season.

Aguerd joined Olympique de Marseille last summer from West Ham United.

So far this season, the defender has made 16 appearances in Ligue 1, scoring one goal. He has also played five matches in the UEFA Champions League and one game in the Coupe de France.

Nayef Aguerd is considered one of the key defensive pillars of the Morocco national football team.

Morocco are placed in Group C of the upcoming FIFA World Cup alongside Brazil national football team, Scotland national football team and Haiti national football team.
