Moses Shumah helps Dynamos claim Kitwe derby bragging rights

Kenya national team striker Moses Shumah scored what turned out to be the winner as Power Dynamos secured a 1-0 Zambian Super League victory against rivals Nkana at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, on Saturday.

Having grabbed a brace in Dynamos’ 3-0 victory over Mines United in Zambia’s top-flight league match on Wednesday, Shumah was on target again, allowing the league leaders to extend their advantage at the top of the table to seven points.

The win pushed Dynamos to 58 points. With the teams sizing each other up in the opening exchanges, Lawrence Mulenga was called into action in the 10th minute, denying Nkana striker Idris Mbombo’s effort.

Shumah had missed opener in 15th minute

A minute later, defender Kondwani Chiboni found himself in the referee’s book after bringing down Nkana striker Lazarous Kambole.

Both teams continued to search for an opener, and Power could have taken the lead, but top scorer Moses Shumah shot over the bar in the 15th minute, allowing Nkana to survive the scare.

On course to keep his third straight clean sheet, Mulenga did well to intercept Jacob Ngulube’s pass with Charles Zulu lurking dangerously.

A minute before the break, the league leaders had another chance to go ahead, but Chiboni’s well-taken free kick was cleared to safety by Nkana goalkeeper Kelvin Malunga.

Level at the break, both teams turned to their benches for solutions, with Power withdrawing the returning-from-injury Chifundo Mphasi for Eddy Ankobo, and Frederick Mulambia for Ronel Manyanga, while Nkana skipper Harrison Chisala made way for defensive midfielder Olver Lumbiya.

In the 48th minute, Shumah’s header from a Chiboni curler went wide. Manyanga made an instant impact, providing an assist for Shumah, who made no mistake as he fired the league leaders into the lead in the 51st minute.

Sensing defeat, Nkana coach Elijah Tana made further substitutions in the 55th minute, introducing Patrick Gondwe and Nduna Zulu for Ngulube and Kambole, respectively.

Dynamos to face Kabwe Warriors

Six minutes before the hour mark, Mbombo got Nkana fans onto their feet when his shot hit the upright as the search for an equaliser continued.

Nkana continued to look for answers from the bench, with Tana bringing in former U-23 attacker Dave Daka for Charles Zulu in the 70th minute.

Eight minutes from full time, coach Osward Mutapa rested Ankobo for Salulani Phiri, while Prince Mumba made way for Linos Makwaza. Nkana responded by bringing in Ronald Kampamba for Mbombo.

At the death, Mutapa handed Samuel Ayodeji his first derby experiencing, resting star man Shumah as Power sealed the win.

After the Mutapa wished Power converted more chances. Power’s next game is on Wednesday against Kabwe Warriors in a Week 29 match at Railways Stadium.
