Kaizer Chiefs Football Manager Bobby Motaung has called for an immediate shift in mentality as the club looks to salvage their season following a premature exit from the Nedbank Cup.
The defending champions saw their title defense go up in smoke on Wednesday night after a narrow 2-1 defeat to Stellenbosch FC at Cape Town Stadium. Despite the setback, the Amakhosi hierarchy is adamant that there is no time to dwell on the loss with continental glory still within reach.
The Glamour Boys have a quick turnaround as they prepare to host Egyptian giants Al Masry at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium this Sunday. For Motaung, this fixture is being treated with the gravity of a “Cup Final” as the club aims to secure a spot in the CAF Confederation Cup knockout stages.
“It’s part of the game. We missed chances we should have scored,” Motaung told the media. “We have been on a tight schedule with the League, CAF, and Nedbank Cup. The [Nedbank] Cup is out of the picture now, so we focus on what’s ahead”.
Motaung was speaking from Mphagani Village in Giyani, where the club put football rivalries aside to assist those in need. In partnership with the City of Polokwane, Kaizer Chiefs officials and players delivered food parcels to communities recently devastated by floods.
The CSI initiative was attended by high-profile leaders, including Limpopo Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba and Polokwane Executive Mayor John Mpe. While the club’s technical team works on regaining confidence on the grass, the management team used the trip to Limpopo to reinforce their bond with the local community.
With the Nedbank Cup no longer an option, Chiefs’ path to silverware now rests on two pillars. The Betway Premiership: Maintaining a competitive run in the league and CAF Confederation Cup: Aiming for a historic run to the final.
“We have been doing well up until the loss on Wednesday,” Motaung concluded. “We have to regain our confidence, bounce back, and be positive. We want to go to the final of this [Confederation] Cup”.
