Portsmouth FC manager John Mousinho has expressed his delight at securing the signing of Bafana Bafana midfielder Luke Le Roux, emphasising the 25-year-old’s impressive form and the competition Pompey faced for his signature.
The English Championship side, Portsmouth FC, announced the signing of Bafana Bafana midfielder Luke Le Roux on Friday. The South African international joins the club from Swedish top-flight side IFK Värnamo for an undisclosed fee.
Le Roux has agreed to a three-year deal at the club, with the move still subject to international clearance and a work permit.

During the player’s unveiling, Blues manager Mousinho revealed that Le Roux’s impressive form over the past few seasons had not only captured Portsmouth’s attention but also attracted interest from several other clubs.
“Luke’s form over the past couple of seasons means he not only found himself on our radar, but also that of a number of other clubs,” Mousinho stated. “So we’re delighted that he’s agreed to join Pompey and we’ve brought in an experienced international player.”
Mousinho described the former Stellenbosch FC star as a crucial addition to the squad. “Luke is a holding midfielder who likes to sit in and dictate the play,” he explained. “He’s physically strong and can also handle the ball. It was a position we were looking to fill and is just what we needed. I’m excited to see him in action in a Pompey shirt.”
This transfer to England’s second tier will see Le Roux playing in the same league as fellow South African Tylon Smith, who recently joined rivals Queens Park Rangers.
Having spent the last five years in Europe, Le Roux initially left SuperSport United in 2020 to join Swedish side Varbergs BoIS. He then had a season in the Dutch top flight with Volendam before moving to IFK Värnamo last summer. During his time at Värnamo, Le Roux played a pivotal role, making 32 appearances and helping the team secure a playoff victory to maintain their status in Sweden’s highest tier of football.
