Malawian international Richard Mbulu has received an unlikely honour after rejoining Mozambican side Costa do Sol on a third stint.
Off-loaded by 2024-25 champions UD Songo during the pre-season, the former Baroka FC striker humbled himself by returning to the Maputo-based Costa do Sol.
The former MAFCO FC forward might have been nervous on his return to the Mocambola league outfit. Afterall, while on the books of the Mozambican league champions in the 2025 season, he scored a winning goal against Costa do Sol.
To his credit, the Flames star greeted the goal with a muted celebration while being apologetic to the fans of his former employers.
Now, having re-joined the Maputo side, management has honoured the 2017 TNM Super League top scorer with a captain’s armband.
In a statement, Costa do Sol said they felt obliged to recognise the commitment of the Flames forward.
“Richard Mbulu takes over the men’s senior team’s armband…strength, character and commitment are your arm now,” part of the statement reads.
The Malawian has taken over the armband from Chico Muchanga who is still with Costa do Sol.
The Flames forward first signed for Costa do Sol in 2018 soon after winning the 2017 TNM Super League Golden Boot Award with 19 goals.
A few months later, the Malawian moved to AD Saojoanene in Portugal for a loan spell which was not a success. He ended up re-joining the Maputo-based club.
A few years later, the 32-year-old left to sign for Baroka FC in South Africa where he spent two seasons. Eventually, a reunion with Costa do Sol for a second spell followed.
