Mozambique Federation surrenders league administration

The Mozambican Football Federation (FMF) has made a major decision regarding the administration of the Mozambican Football League (LMF) otherwise also known as Moçambola.

FMF seized control of the country’s flagship 14-member league from LMF in January 2026 following a cocktail of administrative lapses.

One such administrative hitch resulted in the 2025 Moçambola season ending prematurely with an average of three rounds of matches remaining.

Now, FMF has done its home work and decided to surrender the administration of the league to FMF for the forthcoming season.

The Mozambique football governing body confirmed the development via a press release issued on Monday.

“Under the terms of the agreement, the FMF (Mozambican Football Federation) grants the LFM (Mozambican Football League) the rights to organize the Moçambola

(Mozambican Football League), with the League being responsible for the operational management of the competition, including its planning, organization, logistical coordination and promotion,

in strict compliance with the regulations, statutes and guidelines of the Mozambican Football Federation,” reads the statement.

What role will Mozambique Federation play?

Following the latest decision, FMF will retain its overall supervisory role of the league body in line with CAF and FIFA statutes.

“In turn, the FMF maintains its role as the regulatory body for national football, guaranteeing the institutional supervision of the competition and ensuring that the championship takes place in accordance with the national and international standards governing the sport. The renewal of this agreement is part of the regulatory strategy,” adds the statement.

In an earlier statement, the federation backed its decision following the chaotic and premature end to the 2025 season.

LMF ended the league prematurely, citing serious financial problems and expiry of contracts for players involved in the league as among the reasons.

Why 2025 Moçambola ended prematurely

UD Songo were declared champions with three games to go after reaching an unassailable lead.

In view of that, FMF Executive Board decided to create a Working Committee, led by the federation itself, including other relevant stakeholders.

The committee analysed the reasons behind the premature discontinuation of the league, including financial, administrative, organizational and sporting factors. The committee will also evaluatee the most suitable competitive model for the Mocambola in the 2026 season and the subsequent campaigns.

Most clubs in the former Portuguese colony complain of exorbitant travel costs due to the long distances between the cities where the teams are based, with most clubs flying their squads to match venues.

For example, the distance between the cities of Maputo and Beira is 729 kilometres or 15 hours of driving.

Mozambique Federation Surrenders League Administration

The Mozambican Football Federation (FMF) has made a significant decision regarding the administration of the Mozambican Football League (LMF), also known as Moçambola, marking a new chapter for football in Mozambique.

Earlier in January 2026, the FMF had taken control of the country’s flagship 14-team league from the LMF after a series of administrative issues disrupted the competition. The intervention by the federation came after the 2025 Moçambola season ended prematurely, leaving several matches unplayed and raising concerns about the management of the league.

Following months of evaluation and discussions with stakeholders, the Mozambique football governing body has now decided to restore the administration of the league to the Mozambican Football League ahead of the upcoming season.

The development was confirmed through an official press release issued by the FMF on Monday.

According to the federation, the agreement allows the LMF to resume its operational responsibilities for the Moçambola competition while still operating under the regulatory supervision of the national governing body.

“Under the terms of the agreement, the FMF (Mozambican Football Federation) grants the LFM (Mozambican Football League) the rights to organize the Moçambola (Mozambican Football League), with the League being responsible for the operational management of the competition, including its planning, organization, logistical coordination and promotion, in strict compliance with the regulations, statutes and guidelines of the Mozambican Football Federation,” the statement explained.

What role will the Mozambique Federation play?

Although the league’s operational management has been returned to the LMF, the Mozambique Football Federation will continue to play an important supervisory role.

The federation will remain responsible for ensuring that the competition complies with both CAF and FIFA regulations, maintaining oversight of national football governance and institutional control of the championship.

“In turn, the FMF maintains its role as the regulatory body for national football, guaranteeing the institutional supervision of the competition and ensuring that the championship takes place in accordance with the national and international standards governing the sport,” the statement added.

The federation also emphasized that renewing the agreement with the league body is part of a broader regulatory strategy aimed at improving the management and sustainability of football competitions in Mozambique.

Why the 2025 Moçambola season ended prematurely

The 2025 Moçambola campaign faced major difficulties which ultimately led to its early conclusion.

The league ended with three rounds of matches remaining, with the organizers citing serious financial challenges as one of the main reasons behind the decision. Expiring contracts for several players across participating clubs also contributed to the premature termination of the season.

Despite the abrupt ending, UD Songo were declared champions after building an unassailable lead at the top of the standings with three games left to play.

Following the controversy, the FMF Executive Board formed a Working Committee to thoroughly examine the factors that led to the disruption of the league.

The committee, led by the federation and involving other key stakeholders, analyzed financial, administrative, organizational and sporting aspects that affected the competition.

One of the committee’s responsibilities was to determine the most suitable competitive structure for the 2026 Moçambola season and future campaigns in Mozambique.

Financial and logistical challenges facing clubs

Clubs in Mozambique have long complained about the high cost of travel across the country, which places significant financial pressure on teams participating in the national league.

Due to the vast distances between major cities, many teams are forced to travel long hours or rely on flights to reach match venues.

For example, the distance between the cities of Maputo and Beira is approximately 729 kilometres, a journey that can take around 15 hours by road. These logistical challenges increase travel expenses and make it difficult for some clubs to maintain consistent participation throughout the season.

As Mozambique prepares for the upcoming Moçambola campaign, football authorities hope that improved administration, stronger financial planning and better coordination between the federation and the league body will help stabilize the competition.

The renewed cooperation between the Mozambique Football Federation and the Mozambican Football League is expected to provide a more sustainable framework for managing the country’s top-flight football competition in the years ahead.
