Mozambique’s Jornal Noticias newspaper reports that the country’s leader made the pledge on Thursday when he addressed the players.
Chapo congratulated the team for reaching the Round of 16 for the first time in the team’s history at the tournament.
“Please accept, on behalf of the Mozambican people and in my own name, congratulations for this historic and unprecedented feat,” Chapo said.
As a special incentive, Chapo has since promised that his government will give each player a bonus of $7,824.31 [500,000 meticais] should they beat the Super Eagles and reach the quarterfinals.
“The Mozambican nation is with you and we have faith that you will prevail in the Round of 16,” he added.
The nation’s football federation has also promised each player $23,000 should they win the AFCON title.
Ahead of the tournament, each player has also received a handsome allowance of around USD $4,000 for the whole tournament only.
The Mambas emerged from the group-stage with three points which was enough to see them through to the knockout phase where Nigeria lie in wait.
Chiquinho Conde’s men lost 1-0 to Ivory Coast, Cameroon (2-1) and beat Gabon 3-2. Before the tournament got underway, the Lusophone nation had never won a match in their history at the competition.
